Black History Month

Every year the Wooten Center conducts a program for Black History Month which keeps our youth in tune with their heritage.

Boys to Men

The Boys To Men program assists young boys in the transition from childhood to manhood through weekly classes that include career guidance, community service, rites of passage and rap sessions. The Books for Boys Program component, founded by the Village Foundation and Books for Boys program, is a reading program for young African-American men that is supplemented by regional and national conferences. Boys must meet specific reading, vocabulary and book-report requirements to attend the conventions, which bring together African-American boys from around the country to meet authors, participate in workshops and meet and network with professionals.

College Track

College Track encourages each child at the Wooten Center to attend college by empowering students and parents to take charge of college planning. Students visit local universities, attend practical college-admissions workshops, meet with current college students, receive guidance on choosing proper classes during middle and high school, and prepare for college prep testing. Parents also receive guidance so that they can more effectively support their children’s educational efforts.

The Corporate Mentoring Program supports the academic, cultural and social skills being taught at the Center by giving Wooten youth the opportunity to visit local businesses and corporations, meet successful professionals, learn about new career opportunities, learn the benefits of a college education and get practical advice. There is an emphasis on graduating high school, preparing to excel in college and developing successful careers.  Corporations involved include, Warner Strategic Marketing, Lenscrafters, Mattel, Merrill Lynch and various smaller organizations.

Ella Fitzgerald Library

The Wooten Center’s Ella Fitzgerald Library provides academic, reference and pleasure-reading materials for our children and their families. Wooten youth have helped build, stock, organize and maintain the library and its books, giving them the opportunity to learn how a library operates and to develop a healthy respect for books. The need for a library in this neighborhood and the value and pleasure of reading cannot be overestimated.
