In December 1993, actor Ron Glass, spokesman
and volunteer for the Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center, introduced
Mrs. Rumph to Mr. Constantine Patarias, a retired businessman.
Mr. Patarias had an idea for a quilt project, similar to the
AIDS Memorial Quilt project, but dedicated to memorializing victims
of violence. He felt the project would be good for the Center
to undertake. Mrs. Rumph thought that it was a great idea, and
so began the arduous task of pulling together the quilt.
The first meeting was held in May 1994. About 35 people were
in attendance. A committee was formed to work out the details
of the quilt.
The design of the panels was assigned to Wooten Center
volunteers Marylou Lamb and Ann Anderson. Each quilt panel would be 18 by
30 inches in size and there would be 13 panels in each quilt.
The first quilt workshop was held in July 1994 with 25 people
in attendance. everyone there had one thing in common --- they
had lost a loved one to violence.
The first panel was created by Mrs. Rumph. The panel consisted
of items that were in her son's pocket at the time he was killed
in a drive-by shooting --- a gold watch, a gold earring, a statue
of liberty charm and eight dollars.
In the last eight months two quilts (26 panels) have been
completed. A third quilt is underway, and others are forthcoming.
Since this is an ongoing project persons interested in participating
should call the center at (323) 756-7203.
