Showing our appreciation to the Boeing Company by displaying our sincere thanks to Mr. Steven Silverstein
Manager / Employee of Labor Relations and Wooten Center Board Member.

Good corporate citizenship is a key component of The Boeing Company. The commitment is simple: we want to ensure that our global communities are healthy. Healthy communities are well educated and have diverse cultural venues, are economically viable, environmentally safe, and promote the well-being and safety of their citizens. To this end, the global contributions of Boeing and its employees exceeded $96 million in 2002.

In the United States, our global goals have a local focus. We work to support and improve the communities in which our employees live and work, and where we do business. To help foster the overall health of those communities, Boeing focuses its U.S. charitable giving in four main areas:
  • Education
  • Health and Human Services
  • Culture and the Arts
  • Civic and Environmental Issues

Education: preparing students for success
Education receives the largest portion of our charitable contributions, with 40 percent to 45 percent targeted to support elementary, secondary and higher education. Boeing works in partnership with schools, colleges and universities to support high academic standards and prepare students for further education and tomorrow's workplace. In higher education, we also contribute to research and to policy initiatives aimed at improving the quality of education and bringing the benefits of education and job opportunities to a diverse group of students. We support public schools in communities where Boeing employees live and work, and strategically focus our support on colleges and universities where we recruit future employees.

Health and Human Services: helping people to help themselves
Any discussion of our company's support of health and human services must begin with our employees. For years, they have given the lion's share of contributions in this area through the Employees Community Fund of The Boeing Company, the largest employee giving fund in the world. In 2002, employees and retirees gave more than $33.6 million.

We contribute to programs and organizations that teach leadership and life skills, encourage good health and safety, and promote emotional and economic self-sufficiency and well-being. Examples are programs that successfully address substance abuse, domestic violence, and child neglect and abuse. We are also involved in supporting quality care for children and the elderly. Our emphasis is on programs that deliver services, educate the public, and provide successful outcomes.

Culture and the Arts: advancing appreciation and understanding
Because the arts enrich the quality of life in our communities, we aid the performing and visual arts and organizations that help citizens understand and appreciate the arts and science and technology. We promote the understanding and appreciation of the aerospace industry and the technologies of flight and space travel.

Civic and Environment: promoting healthy habitats and economic growth
Boeing helps programs and organizations that promote environmentally safe and responsible communities. We support programs that teach the values of informed stewardship of natural resources and encourage environmental awareness. We also support selected initiatives that promote economic strengthening of communities, while encouraging free enterprise and long-term growth.
