I'm
Dick Talley, a volunteer at the Wooten Center. My wife Mary and
I have been volunteering at the Wooten Center since 1992. My
wife tutors smaller children in reading, while I have the older
ones read me articles out of the day's LA Times. We go to the
center every Monday and Friday afternoon. In addition, I'm Webmaster
for this site. Every volunteer has his own motivation, I feel
I'm helping the kids, but I come down to Center for myself too.
I meet interesting people that I wouldn't otherwise meet, and
find out what's going on in this big city of ours. A volunteer
in South Central Los Angeles quickly learns that things aren't
quite like they are portrayed in the media.
In order to give prospective volunteers an idea what to expect, we have prepared the following Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about volunteering at the Wooten Center. Those having additional questions can contact me at: talleyca@yahoo.com
What
kinds of people volunteer at the Wooten Center?
Volunteers at the Wooten Center are an ethnic
and economic cross-section of Los Angeles.
How
much time would I have to spend?
Whatever time you can spare. A typical volunteer
spends two to three hours per visit, once or twice a week.
Is
it safe in the area around the Center?
Relatively speaking, South Central LA isn't as
safe as Beverly Hills, but in its seven years of operation no
volunteer at the Wooten Center has ever experienced any negative
encounters.
Are
the kids easy to work with?
The children range from highly responsive and
cooperative to deeply troubled.
What
will I gain from my efforts?
Satisfaction grom having made a difference in
several children's lives, and an increasing awareness of this
city of ours.
I
was brought up in a white upper middle-class family. Can I be
a role model for a black teenager?
Yes, you can be a role model for a black teenager.
The time you will spend with that teen will inspire and motivate
them because they know you believe in them and are taking an
interest in them..
Would
my volunteer work be tax deductible?
You cannot deduct the value of your time, but
you CAN deduct the cost of any supplies or materials that you
bring. You can also deduct your mileage coming to and returning
from the center.
